According to Wikipedia, the cardigan was actually named after James Brudenell, 7th Earl of Cardigan, a British military commander, following his service in the Crimean War. Wikipedia noted that a citation was needed for this, hence I am not sure how accurate it actually is. Anyways the cardigan is usually machine- or hand-knitted from wool or cotton although cheaper ones may be partially acrylic. These are compounds which are derived from acrylic acid.
Another amazing thing about the cardigan is that they are available for both genders. Hence there is nothing to say that only women can wear cardigans, though I think more women then men use cardigans to match their outfits.
